Welcome to Bolinas
A rural beachside community
Bolinas is a small coastal community in Marin County, California. It’s located about 13 miles northwest of San Francisco, making it a small town with big city access. Its beaches are beautiful but less well-known than some of its neighbors, making it the perfect place for a quiet, coastal life.
Bolinas is best known for its tight-knit community and rustic charm. It has a lot to offer vis-a-vis restaurants and local shops but keeps a tight leash when it comes to bigger builds (there aren’t any major hotels in this little town). Its proximity to San Francisco and Sonoma Valley make it the perfect hideaway.
The average price of homes in Bolinas ranges from $1 million to $2 million. Homes are largely beach bungalows with sweeping views of the cliffs and ocean. With so much to offer, it’s no surprise Bolinas real estate goes for top dollar.
What to Love

People & Lifestyle
The people in Bolinas are exclusive but in a community-minded way. They want to preserve the rustic charm of their home and reject any large-scale buildings or endeavors. Bolinas is truly a beachside community in terms of location and attitude. Roll from the beach to a local cafe—no judgment if there’s sand between your toes!
Bolinas is ideal for families—it’s home to many excellent schools and has a very accessible downtown area. It’s also a perfect place for adults looking to “get away from it all.” It’s a hideaway where you can find peace without feeling trapped or too far from a nearby city.
Dining, Shopping, & Entertainment
Bolinas’ strong community shines through when it comes to shopping and dining. The
Bolinas People Store is a community-funded and run shop where you can find all sorts of healthcare foods and products.
Commonweal and Commonweal Garden are other healthy living options. They offer health and healing workshops as well as educational and artistic opportunities.
Bolinas’ food options are healthy, too.
Coast offers its famous fish ‘n chips as well as vegan options.
Smiley’s Saloon draws from its Hispanic roots to make fresh food at this community institution.
Bovida also has healthy options and specializes in delicious acai bowls!
Things to Do
Bolinas is all about conserving the community—its people and its land. So many of the activities in this small town are about the people and area that define it.
The
Bolinas Museum is home to an ever-changing array of exhibits, all of which highlight the history of coastal Marin. Another coastal preservation effort? The
Duxbury Reef State Marine Conservation Area at Agate Beach. Take in the coastal view as you wait for the tide pools to fill up with fascinating creatures.
Bolinas Beach (often called Brighton Beach) is a beautiful, quiet spot for a day of seaside fun.
Point Reyes National Seashore is another must-see destination. The Point Reyes lighthouse guides migrating whales along this protected length of coastline.
Schools
Bolinas is home to many excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:
- Bolinas Stinson Unified School District (grades PreK-8)
